What do “damask napkins” mean and why are they mercerized?
“Damask” refers to a manufacturing process in which warp- and weft-faced sections of the table linen alternate with each other to create patterns, such as an satin band. Damask napkins are slightly shiny, the gastronomy napkin radiates a special festive atmosphere.
If cotton is used in the production of the gastronomy napkins, it is recommended to mercerize them beforehand. Mercerising is a finishing process that gives the cotton a wash-resistant shine and additional strength. During mercerising, the cotton from which the catering napkins are made is exposed to concentrated caustic soda solution, which causes the fibres to swell and change their structure positively. The cotton is given a silky sheen, is easier to dye or bleach and has a higher strength - all properties that make our gastro napkins stand out. A mercerised gastronomy napkin stands for special durability, it withstands countless washings without any problems and is particularly easy to care for.
